Keira took a very unexpected turn for the worse tonight. She is requiring more oxygen than she has previously needed and is laboring over each breath. Twice she was not able to recover from apnea episodes and had to be bagged by the nurses. (They squeezed breaths into her lungs to get her breathing again). The reason for this turn is unknown. Her lung x-rays are still showing the same lung damage as before, but not necessarily worse. Our greatest fear at this time is that there could be an unidentified infection. Her bloodwork is currently not showing any sign of infection, but the doctors have started her on IV antibiotics as a precaution. She is receiving another blood transfusion for a low red blood cell count, but the doctors do not think that a low red blood cell count alone would have triggered these breathing problems. They have also stopped her feeds and put her back on CPAP. Please keep our little one in your prayers that the source of her breathing problems will be found and that she will recover quickly.
